Traveling for Work - is it typical to expect to share a room with a coworker?

Options

Work "retreat" next month & HR has told us we're sharing rooms (4 to a room in bunk beds).

I've never had to share a hotel room or cabin with a colleague before and given the world we live in now a days, this just seems like an HR nightmare waiting to happen. Has anyone ever dealt with this? I'm bamboozled.

Definitely not. I've only heard of this happening in horror stories on Reddit after they've become HR nightmares.

I personally have not but that was the standard at one of my brother's previous companies (2 to a room)😐️

    No thanks!!

Pre-Covid I had a client who had a similar standard - each year at their SKO employees would have to sleep 2 to a room and they weren't able to choose their roommates. Since then, though, they have not had to share so I will be curious to see what comes from this experience, especially with the new world we are living in almost 4 years later!

P.S. - I would NEVER want to share a room with a coworker, I need my space at the end of each conference day.

I never have, but a friend of mine who works at Facebook always has to for their conferences. Luckily, they get to choose who they room with.

We used to in years past - especially when budgets were tight. Of late, however, that eased with fewer people traveling overall. I haven't had to share a room in over 10 years.

  • Second startup I worked with back in 1999-2002 did it briefly when it was less than 100 employees and early employees were ok with the sacrifice, but I imagine it got really hard to recruit the talent they wanted if you told them they'd have to bunk up on work trips. Four to a room seems insane. I'm shocked HR would allow it.
