Creating segments based on time in buying stage

Hi folks,

One thing we are noticing according to our 6sense data is that our ideal accounts are "sticky" in the Consideration buying stage (i.e., not moving to Decision and Purchase as much), and there is an uptick in the number of accounts entering our streams at the top of the funnel.

Is there a way I can create a segment based on how long accounts have remained in a specific buying stage according to 6sense data? I'm not quite sure which filters would account for that.

Hi Radhika - that's an interesting question that has two answers. First is in regards to the "stickiness" of accounts that see to sit in Consideration stage. Generally speaking, Consideration stage tends to be a stage where accounts exist if they are showing some level of intent, but not necessarily high intent with direct engagement. These accounts are normally in Consideration based on solely keyword research (at a high volume), or keyword research + bombora surge topic activity. It's possible that there is some low volume of traditionally higher intent activities (website visits, MAP engagement, contact engagement, etc) in the Consideration stage but we'd expect those accounts to be on the brink of moving into Decision or beyond based on the volume of those activities and the specific activities themselves. All this to say, accounts in Consideration only stay there until they show intent signals that show more intense intent, in which case they'll quickly move to Decision or Purchase based on the specifics.

As far as Segment to identify these types of accounts, the main way you'd be able t achieve that would rely on creating new fields on the Account object utilizing some sort of workflow on your end to mark the historical date that the buying stage (topographical) changes, where this field only updates when the Buying Stage name changes (aka marks date that Consideration is pushed to an account, this remains static, account moves to Decision, update that date field to be when Decision is input) then build out a segment to look at that new custom field with the date stamp, and you'd want to select "is On Relative Date 90 days back" (or 30 or 180 etc, whatever your timeframe is) to know that the accounts being reflected in the results are accounts who have been in that stage that they're in for the days you select. There is not an out of the box way to do this in 6sense segments or using the current default "6sense update date" since that will be updated each time the numerical score updates and new scores are pushed.

Hopefully that provides some valuable information and can give you some good initial steps to work towards a solution.
